Your app, featured in the Store, WOW!

The first week of March, one of my Windows 8 apps got featured in the Dutch Windows 8 Store. There are a lot of things you can do to increase the amount of downloads your app is getting, but getting featured helps a lot. Normally the app get’s about 10 to 15 downloads a day, during the featured period it was around 110 each day (178 on March 3rd).

image

Of course the “how to get featured” is a big secret. We do know, not providing the promotional art during the submission process will not help your app getting featured.

If you have any tips, please share them in the comments.

Ukraine has revived tensions between Russia and the West. The clash is geopolitical, but bad economics lurk in the context. Russia has suffered from two ideological imports, first communism and then ultra free markets. Now it is harmed by Western easy money and capital flight. Commentary

I understand why Ukrainian people wanted change. They have had enough of the authorities in power during the years of Ukraine's independence. Presidents, prime ministers and parliamentarians changed, but their attitude to the country and its people remained the same. They milked the country, fought among themselves for power, assets and cash flows and did not care much about the ordinary people. They did not wonder why it was that millions of Ukrainian citizens saw no prospects at home and went to other countries to work as day labourers. I would like to stress this: it was not some Silicon Valley they fled to, but to become day labourers. Last year alone almost 3 million people found such jobs in Russia. According to some sources, in 2013 their earnings in Russia totalled over $20bn (?16.7bn), which is about 12% of Ukraine's GDP.

What matters now is that this decision was made in clear violation of the constitutional norms that were in place even then. The decision was made behind the scenes. Naturally, in a totalitarian state nobody bothered to ask the citizens of Crimea and Sevastopol. They were faced with the fact. People, of course, wondered why all of a sudden Crimea became part of Ukraine. But on the whole - and we must state this clearly, we all know it - this decision was treated as a formality of sorts because the territory was transferred within the boundaries of a single state. Back then, it was impossible to imagine that Ukraine and Russia may split up and become two separate states. However, this has happened.

What this will do is add to the doubts and confusion that already lurk everywhere in our country. Fewer and fewer seem ready to speak out and say what is true. Indeed, we appear to have become confused as to what the truth is and the ideas that began to breed in our country since the 1980s have taken stronger and stronger roots. Lately, a little additional fertiliser seems to have been placed under them, allowing them to grow taller and stronger.

The old dictators are desperately trying to hang on to what is no more possible. They are unable to withstand the force which young men and women, who have seen a glimpse of joy, hope and, most of all, freedom, have brought to the fore. These men and women are no more content with the old suffocation. Time is on their side. Yet, in recognising the long journey ahead, before a really new Middle East will emerge, one must remember that the per capita income of an average Middle Eastern is $1,200 per year, about one-tenth that of a European. These countries spend a staggering $60 billion every year on military equipment, with countries like Syria spending nearly 50 percent of their budget on arms. Economic cooperation is almost non-existent among the 23 Arab countries which are members of the Arab League; even the existing rail lines between Saudi Arabia and Syria have not been used for tens of year; pipelines have also been out of use.

The ticket to not being surprised by those "hidden" fees is to always ask questions up front. If somewhere in the conversation with a representative you have a funny feeling that something isn't right, go with your instincts and look for another merchant account provider. It just may save you some unwanted surprises in the end when your merchant account is issued and you get your first monthly statement in the mail.

If you're worried about privacy and how it is related to Facebook, it really doesn't matter how many times Facebook adjusts its privacy settings. The fact of the matter is that there is no more privacy, unless you don't interact with people whatsoever. This applies whether you have a Facebook account or not. That really makes no difference if someone whips out their phone and takes a picture of you. With most modern phones, all they have to do is tap a button to send it right to Facebook for all of their friends to see. Did you say or do something embarrassing at a party? Witnesses can easily become instant broadcasters, and there's a good chance that some of their Facebook friends know you.

The actual distinction between the point and cursor probably isnt important when youre first starting out with Emacs. But if you are curious, think about it this way. The cursor is the visual representation of the point. The cursor is always on a particular character position in the current buffer. The point, on the other hand, lives in the space between characters on in the buffer. So you might say that if the cursor is on the letter `h in the word the then the point is between the `t and the `h.

You've put the hours in, and now you get to play, have dinner and do the whole bedtime routine, rather than racing in for the last story. By thinking in terms of 168 hours (a week), rather than 24, you get much more quality time overall than if you try to do certain things every day.

STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: June 4, 2008 The shuttle and station crewmembers float into the newly-opened Kibo lab. Credit: NASA TVThe 10 astronauts aboard the shuttle-space station complex opened up the newly installed Japanese Kibo module today at 5:05 p.m., floated inside and literally bounced off the walls, enjoying a chance for some impromptu zero gravity acrobatics in the roomy new addition.Floating in the middle of the brightly lighted module, Japanese astronaut Akihiko Hoshide held up a sign written in Japanese that, roughly translated, said "aerospace experiments - astronauts wanted."Measuring 37 feet long and 14 feet wide, Kibo - "Hope" in Japanese - is so large it had to be launched with only a handful of experiment and control system racks in place. As such, the module was virtually empty when the crew floated inside, giving the astronauts and cosmonauts more than enough room to bounce and tumble about."This is a great moment for the Japanese folks," Hoshide said before floating inside. "We have the JPM (Japanese pressurized module), the Kibo module, installed yesterday. And now we have the hatch to be opened. I just want to thank all of the Japanese folks that have been working very, very hard. I know it's been like 20-plus years to get this module up in space. It's a beautiful module. We have a new 'hope' on the space station."It looks pretty empty because we don't have a lot of racks inside (yet)," he added before opening the main hatch. "But one engineer said down on Earth 'it looks really empty, but it's full of dreams.' And I really think that's what it is."After addressing flight controllers and engineers at the Tsukuba Space Center in Japanese, a flight director praised the astronauts for reaching "this historical moment. Welcome to JEM! Enjoy your new module!""Thank you very much, Tsukuba," Hoshide replied. "This is an international program and with the help of the ground and the crew members up here, we're all a team and we couldn't have done this without everyone's help. So thank you very much."He then unfurled a large, dark blue banner with "Kibo" written across it in large white letters."The Kibo module is open!" Hoshide exclaimed.Kibo can accommodate 23 experiment and equipment racks, but it was launched with just four in place to keep the weight down to 16 tons. Another eight racks were launched in a smaller Japanese logistics module that was temporarily mounted atop the station's Harmony module in March. The logistics module will be removed from Harmony and bolted to Kibo Friday. Equipment transfers will begin right away.Additional coverage for subscribers:VIDEO:KIBO SCIENCE LAB ATTACHED TO THE SPACE STATION VIDEO:KIBO MODULE UNBERTHED FROM SHUTTLE PAYLOAD BAY VIDEO:CLOSEUP INSPECTION OF STATION'S SOLAR ROTARY JOINT VIDEO:FOSSUM UNBOLTS LOCKS ON KIBO'S WINDOW COVERINGS VIDEO:SPACEWALKERS REMOVE COVERS ON KIBO'S PORT VIDEO:SHUTTLE POWER UMBILICALS UNHOOKED FROM KIBO VIDEO:SHUTTLE INSPECTION BOOM RETRIEVED FROM THE STATION VIDEO:SPACEWALKER RON GARAN REMOVES COVER ON BOOM VIDEO:SPACEWALKER MIKE FOSSUM FREES ARM'S ELBOW CAMERA VIDEO:ANIMATION OF KIBO MODULE INSTALLATION VIDEO:ANIMATION OF INSPECTION BOOM RETRIEVAL VIDEO:NARRATED PREVIEW OF SPACEWALK NO. 1 VIDEO:TUESDAY'S FLIGHT DIRECTOR INTERVIEW VIDEO:THE FLIGHT DAY 3 HIGHLIGHTS MOVIE VIDEO:CREW'S REMARKABLE CAMCORDER FOOTAGE FROM MONDAY VIDEO:MONDAY'S MISSION STATUS BRIEFING VIDEO:SHUTTLE CREW WELCOMED INTO STATION VIDEO:DISCOVERY DOCKS TO SPACE STATION VIDEO:SHUTTLE PERFORMS RENDEZVOUS BACKFLIP VIDEO:THE FLIGHT DAY 2 HIGHLIGHTS MOVIE VIDEO:CREW'S CAMCORDER FOOTAGE FROM FLIGHT DAY 2 VIDEO:SUNDAY'S MISSION STATUS BRIEFING VIDEO:THE FLIGHT DAY 1 HIGHLIGHTS MOVIE VIDEO:EXTERNAL TANK SEEN AFTER SEPARATION VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: VAB ROOF VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA CS-1 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA CS-2 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA CS-6 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: FRONT CAMERA VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: BEACH TRACKER VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: PAD PERIMETER VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: UCS-12 TRACKER VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: UCS-23 TRACKER VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: PLAYALINDA BEACH VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: PATRICK AIR FORCE BASE VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: PRESS SITE VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: WEST TOWER VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA 009 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA 041 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA 049 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA 050 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA 051 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA 054 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA 060 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA 061 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA 063 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA 070 VIDEO:LAUNCH REPLAY: CAMERA 071 VIDEO:LIFTOFF OF DISCOVERY WITH KIBO LAB! The secret to the mice's success is their extremely thin skin. The skin has a higher number of hair follicles, which makes it less connected and easier to tear. Compared to a regular house mouse's skin, it takes 77 percent less energy to create a lesion on the African spiny mouse. Moreover, they can lose up to 60 percent of the skin on their back if necessary to get away from a predator.

It has two buildings in Williamsburg, the brewery and a building across the street where it stores and ages its beer. Leases are up in 2025, and Brooklyn Brewery's co-founder and president, Steve Hindy, is already worried that the company will get kicked out of its warehouse. Once an iron foundry, the building, built in 1896, has been bought by developers who Hindy says won't renew the lease. He suspects that they want to convert the space into apartments.

Posted: May 21, 2006 This illustration depicts the GOES-N spacecraft. Credit: BoeingGOES-N is the first spacecraft to be launched in the new GOES N-P series of geostationary environmental weather satellites. Developed by NASA for the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), the GOES satellites continuously provide observations of the Earth including the continental U.S., providing weather monitoring and forecast operations, as well as a continuous and reliable stream of environmental information and severe weather warnings. The GOES environmental satellites are key in helping meteorologists observe and predict local weather events, including thunderstorms, tornadoes, fog, flash floods, and other severe weather. In addition, GOES observations have proven helpful in monitoring dust storms, volcanic eruptions and forest fires. Plus, the satellites support the search and rescue satellite aided system (SARSAT). The program directly enhances the quality of human life and furthers the protection of the Earth's environment. Each GOES satellite carries two major instruments: an Imager and a Sounder. These instruments acquire high-resolution visible and infrared data, as well as temperature and moisture profiles of the atmosphere. They continuously transmit data to ground terminals where it is processed for rebroadcast to primary weather service offices in the U.S. and around the world, including the global research community. These instruments provide two valuable features. The first, flexible scan, offers smallscale area imaging that allows meteorologists to take pictures of local weather trouble spots. This allows them to improve short-term forecasts over local areas. The second feature, simultaneous and independent imaging and sounding, is designed to allow weather forecasters to use multiple measurements of weather phenomena to increase the accuracy of their forecasts. The GOES-N mission will be a vital contributor to weather, solar, and space operations and future science improvements with weather prediction and remote sensing. The satellite will aid severe storm warnings, resource management, search and rescue, emergency managers, and likely lead to additional advances in environmental sciences and multifaceted data applications of remotely sensed phenomena. GOES-N data will add to the global climate change databases of knowledge, embracing many civil and government environmental forecasting organizations that work to benefit people everywhere and help save lives. GOES-N is scheduled to launch in the summer of 2006 on board a Boeing Delta IV (4,2) Expendable Launch Vehicle from the Space Launch Complex (SLC 37B) at Cape Canaveral Air Force Station. The NASA-NOAA PartnershipIn 1983, NASA signed an agreement with the NOAA to design and build a new generation of environmental satellites. These satellites would carry instruments designed to operate as never before, taking near continuous observations of Earth. NASA and NOAA have worked jointly to perfect, develop and complete the GOES program, begun in 1975 with the launch of the GOES-1 satellite. The two agencies have been actively engaged in a cooperative program ever since, and will continue the GOES series with the launch of the GOES-N satellite.NOAA manages the overall GOES Program and establishes requirements, provides funding, distributes environmental data for the U.S., and determines the need for satellite replacement. NOAA also designs and develops the ground system needed to acquire, process and disseminate the satellite data.NASA teams with NOAA to acquire and manage the study, design and development of each of the GOES spacecraft. NASA's Goddard Space Flight Center (GSFC) in Greenbelt, Md., is responsible for the construction, integration and verification testing of the spacecraft, instruments and unique ground equipment. Working as a team, NOAA and NASA design, develop, install and integrate the ground system needed to acquire, process, and disseminate the data from the sensors on the GOES satellites. NASA's GSFC is responsible for the procurement of the GOES satellites for NOAA including final testing in Florida and the initial on-orbit checkout. NOAA is responsible for satellite operation, data distribution and management of the program. Boeing Launch Systems will conduct the commercial launch of GOES-N with a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) launch license. Boeing is responsible for the Delta IV launch vehicle processing at SLC-37B, the integration of the GOES-N spacecraft with the Boeing Delta IV and the launch countdown activities.Design and OperationsIn the past, scientists from environmental service agencies have stated a need for continuous, dependable, timely and high-quality observations of the Earth and its environment. This new series of GOES satellites provide continuous observations to fill the need. The instruments on board the satellites measure the Earth's emitted and reflected radiation from which atmospheric temperature, winds, moisture and cloud cover can be derived.GSFC engineers design the satellite to operate in geosynchronous orbit 22,000 miles above the Earth. At this orbit, because the satellite's orbital velocity matches the rotation of the Earth, it appears to remain stationary in the sky. In addition, GSFC engineers develop the GOES satellites to have a three-axis body stabilized spacecraft design. This enables the satellite to "stare" at the Earth and provide images of clouds more frequently, relay an increased amount of data about the Earth's surface temperature and water vapor fields, and to sound continuously the atmosphere for vertical thermal and vapor profiles. The system provides long-range weather forecasting, ensuring that non-visible data, for any region of the Earth, is no more than six hours old. It serves the central and eastern Pacific Ocean; North, Central, and South America; and the central and western Atlantic Ocean. Pacific coverage includes Hawaii and the Gulf of Alaska. Two satellites accomplish this, GOES west located at 135 degrees west longitude and GOES East at 75 degrees west longitude. NOAA's Command and Data acquisition station located in Wallops, Va., supports the interface to both satellites. The NOAA Satellite Operations Control Center in Suitland, Md. provides spacecraft scheduling, health and safety monitoring and engineering analyses. Processed data are received at the National Weather Service's National Centers for Environmental Prediction in Camp Springs, Md., and NWS forecast offices across the U.S.The GOES N-P series has several new top-level capabilities. These capabilities include the Weather Facsimile service changing from an analog to a digital Low Rate Information Transmission format; expanded measurements for the space environment monitoring instruments; a new dedicated channel for the Emergency Managers Weather Information Network service; and most importantly, a more stable platform for supporting improved Imager, Sounder, and SXI instruments.GOES-N will carry the government furnished ITT Space Systems Division built Imager and Sounder instruments to provide regular measurements of the Earth's atmosphere, cloud cover, ocean temperatures and land surfaces. An advanced attitude control system using star trackers and an optical bench onto which the Imager and Sounder are mounted will provide enhanced instrument-pointing ability. These enhancements improve image navigation and registration to better locate severe storms and other events important to NOAA. NASA's GSFC and the NOAA's National Environmental Satellite, Data and Information Service (NESDIS) have set a higher standard of accuracy for the GOES-N series, including data pixel location to approximately two kilometers from geosynchronous orbit of 22,300 miles above the Earth's surface.GOES-N will also carry a government furnished Solar X-ray Imager (SXI) built by Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center in Palo Alto, Calif. Carried for the first time by GOES-M launched in 2001, the SXI will monitor solar weather conditions, including the dynamic environment of energetic particles, solar wind streams and coronal mass ejections emanating from the sun. This data will allow forecasters to issue alerts of "space weather" conditions that may interfere with ground and space systems.Another instrument package onboard GOES-N will be the Space Environment Monitor (SEM). SEM consists of three instrument groups including an Energetic Particle Sensor package, two magnetometer sensors, and a Solar X-Ray Sensor with an Extreme Ultraviolet Sensor. The units will perform in situ measurements of the magnetic and particle environments as well as remote measurement of the integrated X-ray emission and the extreme ultraviolet spectra of the sun.The Energetic Particle Sensor and the Solar X-Ray Sensor with an Extreme Ultraviolet Sensor were built by Assurance Technology Corporation, Carlisle, Mass., and the two magnetometers were built by Science Applications International Corporation, Columbia, Md.As of May 2006, the GOES system consists of GOES-12, operating as GOES-East in the eastern part of the constellation at 75 degrees west longitude, and GOES-10, operating as GOES-West at 135 degrees west longitude. GOES-11 is in an on-orbit storage mode nominally located at 105 West longitude and is scheduled to replace GOES-10 during the summer of 2006. In addition to relaying information about the Earth's climate and atmosphere, the GOES satellites also provide instantaneous relay of distress signals from people, aircraft, or marine vessels to the search and rescue ground stations of the Search and Rescue Satellite Aided Tracking (SARSAT) System. A dedicated search and rescue transponder on board GOES is designed to detect emergency distress signals originating from Earthbased sources. These unique identification signals are normally combined with signals received by NOAA's Polar Operational Environmental Satellite system and relayed to a search and rescue ground terminal. The combined data are used to perform effective search and rescue operations.GOES System in Weather ForecastingThe GOES system is a basic element of U.S. weather monitoring and forecast operations and is a key component of NOAA's National Weather Service modernization program. Spacecraft and ground-based systems work together to accomplish the GOES mission of providing weather imagery and quantitative sounding data that form a continuous and reliable stream of environmental information for weather forecasting and related services. The GOES satellites provide weather imagery and atmospheric sounding information for improved weather services, particularly for the timely forecasting of life-and propertythreatening severe storms. The GOES N-P series will aid activities ranging from severe storm warnings to resource management and advances in science. GOES N-P data will add to the global community of knowledge, embracing many civil and government environmental forecasting organizations that work to benefit people everywhere and help save lives.Commercial weather groups, universities, the Department of Defense, NASA and the global research community also use GOES data products. Other users of these products can also be found in air and ground traffic control, ship navigation and agricultural sectors. The GOES satellites are given a letter designation while under construction on the ground and are renamed with a numerical designation after successful launch and orbit-raising. The satellites are built in alphabetical order but are not necessarily launched in this same order.GOES-N will be renamed GOES-13 upon reaching orbit where it will be stored until needed.Data from the GOES spacecraft are helping NASA scientists design instruments for follow-on missions and for other NASA programs. NASA's Science Mission Directorate works to improve the lives of all humans through the exploration and study of Earth's system, the solar system and the Universe by using its unique observational capabilities from space. Earth science data, which NASA distributes to researchers worldwide, is essential to making informed decisions about the environment. GOES-N Enhancements Over Previous GOESThe Satellite design lifetime has been improved from 7 to 10 years, and the expected propellant lifetime has been increased to 14 years. The command data rate has been increased to 2,000 bps, as compared to a data rate of 250 bps for the previous generation of GOES satellites. The telemetry data rate has been improved to provide data at either 4,000 or 1,000 bps, as compared to the 2,000 bps data rate on the previous generation. The power subsystem has been improved so that operations during eclipse periods can be sustained. Outages due to solar intrusion Keep Out Zones (KOZ) will also be minimized because thermal shields have been added to the secondary mirror structure elements for the Imager and Sounder instruments. Over 600 more images and sounding sequences should be accomplished per year. Spacecraft design reduces solar loading on the radiant cooler and patch (no solar sail) so lower detector temperatures should reduce noise. An improved Image Navigation and Registration (INR) system will use star trackers to provide precision image navigation and registration information for use with the Imaging and Sounding data products. This will improve knowledge by at least 50 percent of exactly where severe weather events are located (3 km accuracy now becomes 1.5 km). A stable optical bench has been provided to isolate the thermal deformations of the spacecraft from the Imager and Sounder instruments.A data product improvement has been developed for digital Low Rate Information Transmission (LRIT) for distribution of data Products that were previously distributed in an analog WEFAX format. The LRIT system permits the transmission of data products consistent with the World Meteorological Organization (WMO) and allows the distribution of more National Weather Service (NWS) information at a higher data rate. The Data Collection System (DCS) has been enhanced with the addition of 300 and 1200 bps Data Collection Platforms (DCPs) and a higher power satellite transponder so that more DCPs can use the link at the same time.A dedicated transponder is being provided to support the Emergency Manager's Weather Information Network (EMWIN) service. The communications services have been tailored to comply with modern national and international requirements.A new Solar X-Ray Imager (SXI) developed by the Lockheed Martin Advanced Technology Center. SXI improvements from GOES-12 include:A back illuminated CCD (no high voltage) Increased dynamic rangeImproved charge collection efficiency (charge spreading/blurring)Image jitter correction using the High Accuracy sun SensorAutomatic flare event detection and more sequence capabilityMultiple image exposure and downlink capability each minuteFlexibility of programmable memory for imaging Shuttle collector mouse pad! This unique 8-inch diameter mouse pad features the insignia for Discovery's STS-114 mission, the first shuttle flight since the Columbia accident.Choose your store: - - - Ares 1-X PatchThe official embroidered patch for the Ares 1-X rocket test flight, is available for purchase.Apollo CollageThis beautiful one piece set features the Apollo program emblem surrounded by the individual mission logos.Expedition 21The official embroidered patch for the International Space Station Expedition 21 crew is now available from our stores.Hubble PatchThe official embroidered patch for mission STS-125, the space shuttle's last planned service call to the Hubble Space Telescope, is available for purchase. | | | | 2014 Spaceflight Now Inc.GOES-N launch timelineSPACEFLIGHT NOW

STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: August 3, 2007In May 2008, NASA's Phoenix lander will slam into the atmosphere of Mars at a blistering 12,750 mph and descend to the frozen surface in a nail-biting seven minutes. Unlike NASA's hugely successful Mars Exploration Rovers, Phoenix will not bounce to a landing cocooned in protective airbags. Instead, it will use a dozen pulsing, computer-controlled rocket motors to make its final descent to a soft landing near the martian polar cap. The last time NASA tried that, the ill-fated Mars Polar Lander simply disappeared, the presumed victim of a premature engine shutdown. This time around, using hardware left over from the polar lander project and a subsequent mission that was canceled in the wake of the 1999 failure, NASA managers believe they have done all that can reasonably be expected to ensure success and carry the agency's on-going "follow the water" strategy of Mars exploration to a new level.Along with fixing the sensor/software glitch believed to be responsible for the Mars Polar Lander's demise, engineers with spacecraft builder Lockheed Martin and NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory found and fixed a variety of other shortcomings in an exhaustive effort to ensure success."This team has put an enormous amount of energy into retiring and finding all sorts of problems," said Barry Goldstein, Phoenix project manager at JPL in Pasadena, Calif. "We are very confident that we basically have retired everything that we can think of. But the simple fact of the matter is, landing on Mars is difficult. Probably the most difficult thing about it is not the things we can think of, it's things we can't think of."I'm confident we have worked as hard as any group of people can. Am I confident in the landing? I'll be nervous. If my fingernails survive that day, it will be a miracle. It's not the things that we know that will hurt us. It's the things we don't know."But if the appropriately named Phoenix mission works, NASA will open a new chapter in its on-going exploration of Mars."The Mars Exploration Rovers ... went to study the past history of water and the discoveries they have made have been very successful in finding out where the water was," Goldstein said. "What Phoenix is doing is using a stationary lander and going to where the water is."Data collected by NASA's orbiting Mars Odyssey indicates vast amounts of ice within a few feet of the surface of Mars at extreme northern latitudes, possibly the remnant of an ancient, now vanished ocean. Phoenix is equipped with an eight-foot robot arm that can dig nearly two feet into the soil next to the lander to tap into that ice and deliver samples to compact instruments and furnaces that will look for signs of organic compounds. While the relatively low-cost Phoenix is not equipped with instruments to search for signs of biological activity, mission scientists are hopeful the spacecraft will be able to determine whether the environment at the ice-soil boundary represents a modern habitable zone."I see this mission as a stepping stone towards the search for life on other planets," said Peter Smith, principal investigator at the University of Arizona. "We're hoping to find a place that we consider really a habitable zone on Mars. To me, if we can find that out, that would be a tremendous success. We're also really interested in following up on the discovery of water ice by the Odyssey spacecraft in 2002 and trying to understand how the ice got there and what it's source was and what its history has been."NASA's Mars Pathfinder lander and rover and the two Mars Exploration Rovers currently weathering a global dust storm on opposite sides of the red planet were built to study the geology of Mars and to confirm the presence of surface water in the distant past. They have done that with stunning success. Phoenix will concentrate on water known to exist today and help scientists determine whether the frozen reservoir is the remnant of a once-vast sea."We want to understand the ice properties," Smith said. "This is a big part of Mars. It's part of the NASA theme of follow the water. Well, we're for the first time getting kind of a fist-full, so to speak, of water and soil and we're going to analyze it."We intend to go where we know there's ice near the surface. Our entire mission is trying to understand the history of this ice, in particular does it melt over time and provide a habitat for some sort of Martian biology?"The Phoenix mission is scheduled to get underway Saturday with launch atop a Delta 2 rocket. Liftoff from complex 17 is targeted for 5:26:34 a.m. with a second opportunity available a half-hour later at 6:02:59 a.m. Forecasters are predicting an 80 percent chance of good weather.Opportunities to launch spacecraft to Mars occur every 26 months as Earth catches up with and passes the red planet in their orbits around the sun. Close approach this time around occurs in December and by launching now, Phoenix can achieve the most energy efficient trajectory. This year's launch period ends Aug. 24.The Mars Pathfinder lander and Mars Global Surveyor, both launched in 1996, were the first two missions in a long-range scientific assault on Mars and the mystery of its missing water. NASA's original Mars program called for launching two missions every two years, culminating in a robotic sample return mission at the end of this decade. But the second pair of spacecraft - the Mars Climate Orbiter and the Mars Polar Lander - were lost in 1999. The Climate Orbiter crashed into the planet due to an embarrassing English-to-metric conversion oversight while the Polar Lander simply disappeared during powered descent to the surface. Engineers believe a sensor-software problem led to the premature shutdown of its engines.Wide-ranging NASA and independent investigations identified major management and technical shortcomings in the implementation of former NASA Administrator Daniel Goldin's "faster, better, cheaper" approach to planetary exploration. The space agency decided to press ahead with the 2001 launch of the Mars Odyssey, currently mapping the red planet in concert with the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, but a lander virtually identical to the lost Polar Lander was mothballed and its mission canceled. After pondering what sort of mission to mount in 2003, NASA managers ultimately settled on a pair of landers equipped with proven, state-of-the-art instruments and a Pathfinder-style parachute and air bag descent system to improve the odds of a safe touchdown. The Spirit and Opportunity rovers successfully bounced down on opposite sides of Mars in January 2004. With a design life of just 90 days, both rovers are still in operation, genuine rock stars in the history of Mars exploration. In the meantime, the Phoenix project was born in 2003, when Smith's team submitted a proposal to incorporate the mothballed 2001 lander hardware in a new mission. And now, it's finally ready to go.The Delta 2 and a solid-fuel upper stage will boost the 1,477-pound spacecraft and its solar-powered interplanetary cruise stage to a departure velocity of around 24,657 mph about 84 minutes after launch. A half-dozen trajectory correction maneuvers are planned and if all goes well, the spacecraft will reach Mars on May 25, 2008.Based on high-resolution images from the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, mission planners ruled out one landing site because of boulder fields that could cause major problems for a legged lander. The current landing zone is located at 67 degrees north latitude, roughly equivalent to Iceland or northern Siberia on Earth. MRO pictures indicate a very smooth terrain. The target landing ellipse measures 12 miles wide by 93 miles long. The entry, descent and landing profile is complex, fast-paced and computer controlled. At the time of landing, Earth and Mars will be 171 million miles apart, so far it will take radio signals 15.3 minutes to make a one-way trip. Data from Phoenix will be relayed back to Earth throughout the descent by NASA's Mars Odyssey and Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter, but realtime commanding will not be possible. Phoenix's survival will depend on its flight software, the martian weather, the terrain at the landing site and a certain amount of luck."Mars has been known as a spacecraft eater," Goldstein said. "We have been fairly successful recently with the MER (landers). But that doesn't make it any easier the next time around."Seven minutes before it hits the discernible atmosphere, Phoenix will separate from its interplanetary cruise stage and reorient itself to put its heat shield forward. Atmospheric entry will occur five minutes later at an altitude of 77.7 miles and a velocity of 3.5 miles per second. Over the next three minutes, the spacecraft will experience peak heating and a deceleration of 9.3 times the force of Earth's gravity at sea level. Now at an altitude of 7.8 miles, a large braking parachute will deploy and 15 seconds later, the no-longer-needed heat shield will fall away. The spacecraft's three landing legs will snap open and a radar altimeter will fire up to compute the spacecraft's altitude and sink rate. Then, in the most dramatic phase of the descent, the lander will separate from its parachute about 3,000 feet above the martian surface. Three seconds later, 12 small rocket motors will begin firing to slow the descent and bleed off horizontal velocity. Unlike the throttled engines on the Viking landers three decades ago, Phoenix relies on pulsing on-off cycles to control the craft's descent rate and orientation. The engines will shut down when sensors on the landing legs contact the surface. For 15 minutes, Phoenix will wait for any dust kicked up by landing to settle out before deploying its two fan-like circular solar arrays. A meteorology mast and the lander's main stereo camera will deploy and engineers will begin a complex sequence of operations to thoroughly check out the robot's systems.A successful soft landing "is a very difficult thing to do," Goldstein said. "We have gone away from the Pathfinder and MER (airbag) landing system for a reason. We have to have an ability to land a larger payload on the surface as we try to expand the Mars program. Eventually, there will have to be a landing system for people. They are not going to want to bounce around in airbags."Phoenix is designed to operate for at least three months and possibly longer. But engineers say the sort of extended life enjoyed by the Mars Exploration Rovers is not an option for Phoenix."The real killer is the ice caps coming down," Goldstein said. "We expect to be encased in solid CO2 at some point, according to what the scientists are telling us. Will we check to see if it thaws out and comes back to life (the following summer)? Sure, but we didn't design this vehicle to survive cryogenic freezing."Final Shuttle Mission PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The crew emblem for the final space shuttle mission is now available in our store. STORY WRITTEN FOR & USED WITH PERMISSIONPosted: March 5, 2009 Credit: NASAIn a galaxy of 200 billion or more stars, one could argue planets like Earth - orbiting suitable stars in habitable "Goldilocks" zones where water exists in liquid form and the temperature is not too hot or too cold - must be common. After all, if only a tiny fraction of the Milky Way's stars harbor such planets, one could still expect untold thousands, if not millions, of potentially habitable worlds. And with numbers like that, it's not at all unreasonable to suppose life arose on at least some of them. Extending that argument to the countless galaxies populating the observable universe, one could easily assume the cosmos must be teeming with life. But statistics alone prove nothing about how solar systems might be constructed. While more than 340 planets have been detected orbiting other stars, the limitations of Earth-based observations mean, with a few exceptions, only huge, Jupiter-class gas giants have been identified to date, many of them orbiting hellishly close to their parent stars.Whether such seemingly strange solar system architectures are common or whether they are simply easier to detect using current methods, is not yet clear. Whether Earth-like planets are common or rare is simply unknown. But it is a question with profound implications, one at the heart of any debate about the possibility of life elsewhere in the universe.NASA plans to take a major step toward answering that question, one way or the other, with launch of a Delta 2 rocket Friday carrying a sophisticated solar-powered satellite called Kepler that is equipped with one of the most powerful digital cameras ever built for space. The $591 million mission is scheduled for liftoff from the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station at 10:49:57 p.m. EST."To this point in time, if you asked me are there other earth's out there, I'd say absolutely, there have to be, we can't be so special," said NASA science chief Ed Weiler. "But if you ask me to prove it, I can't."The Kepler mission "very possibly could tell us that earths are very, very common, that we have lots of neighbors out there. Or, it could tell us that earth's are really, really, really rare, perhaps we're the only Earth," Weiler said. "I think that would be a very bad answer because I for one don't want to live in an empty universe where we're the best there is! That's a scary thought to many of us. But Kepler will tell us that answer and it will tell us soon."Trailing the Earth in its orbit around the sun, the Kepler spacecraft will aim a 95-megapixel camera on a patch of sky the size of an out-stretched hand that contains more than 4.5 million detectable stars. Of that total, the science team has picked some 300,000 that are of the right age, composition and brightness to host Earth-like planets. Over the life of the mission, more than 100,000 of those will be actively monitored by Kepler. Kepler during launch preps in Florida. Credit: Ben Cooper/Spaceflight NowThe spacecraft's camera will not take pictures like other space telescopes, rather it will act as a photometer and continually monitor the brightness of candidate stars in its wide field of view and the slight dimming that will result if planets happen to pass in front.By studying subtle changes in brightness from such planetary transits - comparable to watching a flea creep across a car's headlight at night - and the timing of repeated cycles, computer analysis can ferret out potential Earth-like worlds in habitable-zone orbits. The probability of finding sun-like stars with Earth-like planets in orbits simliar to ours - and aligned so that Kepler can "see" them - is about one-half of 1 percent. Given the sample size, however, that still leaves hundreds of potential discoveries. But it will take three-and-a-half years of around-the-clock observations to capture the repeated cycles needed to confirm detection of an Earth-like world."Kepler is designed to find hundreds of Earth-size planets, if such planets are common around stars, dozen of these planets, if they are in the habitable zone," said William Borucki, Kepler principal investigator at NASA's Ames Research Center."If we find that many, it certainly will mean that life may well be common throughout our galaxy because there's an opportunity for life to have a place to evolve. If, on the other hand, we don't find any, that will be another profound discovery. It will mean that Earths must be very rare, we might be the only life in our Universe. In fact, it will mean there will be no Star Trek."But he quickly added: "We are hoping to find hundreds, of course. ... Although Kepler will not find E.T., it is hoping to find E.T.'s home."Jon Morse, director of astrophysics at NASA headquarters in Washington, described Kepler as "our planetary census taker.""We're going to get the full sweep of the types of planets in different types of orbits around different types of stars through a big cross-section of our galaxy," he said. "It is going to shape the way that we formulate our plans for future missions on our quest to find Earth-like planets and study their atmospheres and look for the bio-markers like the types of molecules in our atmosphere that may indicate life."Said Michael Bicay, director of science at the Ames Research Center: "The ramifications of the results of this mission, whatever those results are, are going to be significant in our understanding of the frequency of Earth-size planets in the local galaxy and the habitable zones." Where Kepler will look. Credit: NASASee larger image Named in honor of Johannes Kepler, the 17th century Copernican astronomer who formulated the laws of planetary motion, NASA's newest science satellite weighs 2,320 pounds and measures 15.3 feet from top to bottom. It is equipped with four solar panels capable of generating 1,100 watts of power, a radiation-hardened PowerPC flight computer and a Ka-band communications link to relay science data back to Earth. The spacecraft was built by Ball Aerospace of Boulder, Colo.Following launch from Complex 17B at the Cape Canaveral Air Force Station, Kepler will pass the moon's orbit in just two days as it heads into a 371-day orbit around the sun, separating slowly from Earth. It will aim itself at a patch of sky near the left wing of Cygnus the Swan, midway between the stars Deneb and Vega. And then, Kepler will simply stare at the same stars for three-and-a-half years. The science team will check in twice a week to check the spacecraft's health and upload commands. Once a month, Kepler will look away from its target area, point is high-gain antenna toward Earth and downlink stored data. Every three months, the spacecraft will rotate 90-degrees around its long axis to keep its fixed solar panels face on to the sun and its radiator pointed toward deep space.Kepler's single science instrument is built around a 55-inch mirror and a 37-inch corrector plate that represents a modified Schmidt telescope design. Light from the primary mirror comes to a focus on an assembly of charge coupled devices, or CCDs, similar in operation to the chips used in commercial video and still cameras. But unlike commercial cameras, Kepler's Focal Plane Array is made up of 42 CCDs, each one measuring 2.32 inches by 1.1 inches and containing 2,200 by 1,024 picture elements, or pixels, for a total of 95 million pixels. The focal plane will be maintained at minus 121 degrees Fahrenheit to improve sensitivity and minimize electrical "noise" in the system. Special lenses will smear out the starlight slightly to make slight changes in brightness more easily detectable. A technician completes the installation of CCD modules into the focal plane assembly. Credit: Ball Aerospace"An Earth-like planet passing in front of a sun-like star is going to cause the brightness of that star to dim by only 1 part per 10,000," said Natalie Batalha, a Kepler co-investigator at San Jose State University. "That's like looking at a headlight from a great distance and trying to sense the brightness change when a flea crawls across the surface. But the Kepler instrument is designed to detect such small changes in brightness."Kepler will be aimed at the same spot in the sky, measuring 10 degrees by 10 degrees, for the life of the mission, actively observing more than 100,000 candidate stars. In contrast, the moon's apparent angular diameter is 0.5 degrees. The Hubble Space Telescope focuses on areas the size of a rice grain held at arm's length.A planetary transit will cause the light from a target star to dim, or wink, on timescales of one to 12 hours, depending on the type of star and the size of the planet's orbit. For a planet like Earth passing in front of a star like the sun, the star's light would dim by just 84 parts per million, or less than 1/100th of 1 percent.Kepler is capable of detecting Earth-like planets around stars ranging from 600 to 3,000 light years away. The Kepler team is particularly interested in planets that may orbit within a star's habitable zone, the region around a star where water on a planet can exist as a liquid. Habitable zones vary in location depending on a star's size and brilliance. By timing changes in a star's light as a transit occurs, scientists can figure out the size of a presumed planet's orbit and thus whether it falls in that star's habitable zone."The habitable zone is where we think water will be," Borucki said. "If you can find liquid water on the surface, we think we may very well find life there. So that zone is not too close to the star, because it's too hot and the water boils. Not too far away where the water's condensed and ice-covered, a planet covered with glaciers. It's the goldilocks zone, not too hot, not too cold, just right for life."Brief changes in a star's light output imply an extremely hot planet orbiting close to its parent. Longer transits imply planets at greater distances."We are interested in finding planets that are not too hot, not too cold, but just right," Borucki said. An artist's concept of a planet passing in front of its parent star. Credit: NASAIn its first year of operation, Kepler is expected to discover Jupiter-class super planets orbiting close to their parent stars with periods of just a few days. The Kepler team requires multiple transits to make sure the photometer is not seeing some other phenomenon, like the passage of an unseen companion star or a major disturbance in the target star's appearance. Ground-based astronomers then will be asked to attempt confirmation and only then will results be announced."After several months of data processing and confirmation by ground-based telescopes, scientists hope to announce their first results approximately in December 2009 at NASA Headquarters ... about giant planets found in short-period orbits," NASA said in its Kepler press kit."Discovery of Earth-size planets in Earth-like orbits requires nearly the full lifetime of the 3.5-year mission, although in some cases three transits are seen in just a little more than two years. Other results that require the full 3.5 years of data are: Planets as small as Mars in short period orbits, which utilizes the addition of dozens or more transits to be detectable; and the detection of giant-inner planets that do not transit the star, but do periodically modulate the apparent brightness due to reflected light from the planet."The first announcement of any Earth-like planets orbiting stars like the sun is not expected before December 2012."What I'm hoping, expecting to see as a community scientist is in the first six months to a year, the big, massive hot Jupiters are going to roll off the Kepler assembly line," said Debra Fischer, astronomy professor at San Francisco State University and a veteran exoplanet observer. "This is exciting because these are bizarre planets. We don't really understand the statistics, how they form, how they moved into their current position and just the sheer number of these objects that Kepler will find is going to help us learn a lot about the systems."And then the next class of planets I think will roll out will be perhaps the hot Neptunes," she said. "Significantly smaller than Jupiter, these objects are thought to exist around something like 30 percent of stars like our sun and low-mass stars. And if that is correct, then Kepler should see quite a few of these very large, something like 17 times the mass of the Earth, orbiting.""And then the hardest detection and by far the most exciting is going to be the detection of bona fide Earths - small, rocky planets, Earth-size planets."While such planets are often thought of as terrestrial "rocky" worlds, "I think that the science fiction writers are going to be challenged to imagine the diversity that we could expect to find, even in this type of planets," Fischer said. "They may not be rocky worlds, they may be water worlds without plate tectonics that force the landmass up above the oceans. These could be worlds that, in fact, have life like our oceans, OK? But perhaps not sending radio signals to us."John Glenn Mission PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The historic first orbital flight by an American is marked by this commemorative patch for John Glenn and Friendship 7.Final Shuttle Mission PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The crew emblem for the final space shuttle mission is available in our store. Credit: Boeing"We're getting goose bumps right now. We're very excited," said HarryBrown, the GPS 2F program's chief engineer at satellite-builder Boeing."There is a pride in working GPS, there is a pride in what we do for thenation and we know this is a national asset."Circling 11,000 miles overhead, the network of GPS satellites emitcontinuous navigation signals that allow users to find their preciseposition in latitude, longitude and altitude and determine time.Originally built as a tool for the U.S. military, the utility has spreadacross the world as an indispensable commercial service. Some 60 satellites have been launched for the system over the past threedecades, and now the Air Force is poised to deploy the initial satellitein the Block 2F series that features even higher accuracy, enhancedinternal clocks, longer life and reprogrammable onboard processors toevolve with future needs."All in all, the 2F is improved performance, better anti-jam and it's gotadditional civil signals to help aviation," said Brown.Choreographing the GPS 2F-1 satellite preparations at the Cape is the 45thLaunch Support Squadron, a team of 75 people making certain that a healthyspacecraft gets to orbit safely."Traditionally, out of the entire lifetime of the satellite, the yearleading up to and including launching the satellite is by far the highestrisk area," said Capt. Matt Hale, the squadron's GPS section chief."We fall into the 45th Launch Group. The Launch Group is tasked withproviding mission assurance capabilities back to SMC, the Space andMissile Systems Center, in L.A. They have program officers that overseethe factories for the satellites and the factories for the rockets. Afterthey go through their development, they ship them down here and our job isto ensure the final integration activities that happen at the launch siteoccur correctly."The satellite was flown to Florida inside a C-17 airlifter on February 11from Boeing's manufacturing facility in El Segundo, California. Afterarriving at the Skid Strip, it was taken to Area 59 were GPS spacecraftundergo their pre-flight preps. A GPS 2F satellite in pictured here in the California factory. Credit: BoeingHale said the work readying the GPS 2F-1 satellite was divided into twophases: an extensive testing period and then the usual launch campaign ofactivities."We have what we call a functional test. We do a test in L.A. before weleave the factory that goes through the whole functions of the spacecraftthat ensures we have a baseline. When we bring it over to the Cape, we doanother set of that test to ensure during transport all of thecharacteristics stayed the same. Transport is a very stressful environmentfor a spacecraft, second only to launch," Hale said.Engineers then performed an end-to-end combined systems test between theuser equipment that will acquire the navigation signals from the satelliteonce it gets into space, as well as checking the connectivity from thesatellite to the ground control hub that operates the spacecraft in orbit."We verified the vehicle in terms of the performance and signalcharacteristics, made sure the user segments would actually lock up andacquire the signal, and verified that the control system hadcontrollability of the satellite," Brown said."We've had very few issues with the vehicle's performance. It's reallyoperated well."The earlier generations of GPS satellites that launched from the Cape --Blocks 2, 2A and 2R -- went through Area 59 before reaching Complex 17where the Delta 2 rockets blasted off. In advance of the 2F era, thesatellite accommodations were upgraded with modifications that includedstricter cleanliness, security changes, a larger door at entrance of themain bay and installation of a more-precise crane."Most of the existing capabilities were there. It was just improving thecurrent capabilities to tailor it to the spacecraft a little more," Halesaid.Area 59 features two large buildings where GPS 2F-1 has traveled throughduring the past couple of months en route to the launch pad, Hale said."We have the NAVSTAR Processing Facility, the NPF, that's where thetesting is done and the very first portion of processing is done. Then wemove over to the DPF, the DSCS Processing Facility, that's where we do ourmajor processing of the satellite."But unlike the previous generations that rode on smaller rockets, the GPS2F craft will be delivered into orbit atop the Delta 4 and Atlas 5 fleetsof boosters in the Air Force's Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle program. That presents a major change in the way the satellites are launched andaffords the ground team a streamlined, if not simpler, task of getting thesatellites in flight-ready condition. An artist's concept depicts GPS 2F-1 and its Delta 4 rocket. Credit: ULAThe Delta 2 rockets, although highly reliable, weren't powerful enough toinject the GPS satellites directly into the orbiting constellation. Thethree-stage vehicles released the craft into a highly elliptical orbitstretching from 100 miles at its closest point with Earth to some 11,000miles at its highest point, which is the altitude where the GPS networkresides. The newly-launched satellites were themselves fitted with asolid-fuel kick motor that ignited a few days into flight and finished thejob of propelling the craft into a circular orbit.United Launch Alliance's powerful Delta 4 and Atlas 5 rockets will haulthe GPS 2F satellites directly to their desired destinations, bypassingthe circuitous route of the past. So instead of taking days to reach theGPS orbit, the new 2F-1 satellite will get there in three-and-a-half hourson launch night. And without having to deal with that kick stage, the Cape team's work isvastly simplified because it doesn't have put the satellites throughstringent spin-balancing and attaching the motor. What's more, the two-piece shroud that serves as the rocket's nose conewill be brought into the cleanroom and placed around the satellite insteadof doing that work at the pad like Delta 2 did. The encapsulated GPS 2F-1payload will be driven to the pad already buttoned up to launch. Before the satellite meets the Delta 4, the past few weeks have involvedinstalling the batteries, loading the maneuvering propellant, working withthe adapter hardware needed to mount GPS 2F-1 onto the rocket and puttingthe final touches on the separation system that will release the craftfrom the launcher."It's all tedious work that has to be done with precision," Brown said.Departure from the cleanroom hangar is targeted for next week, when amotorized trailer carries the 3,400-pound satellite up the road to Complex37. It will be hoisted into the pad tower and bolted atop the rocket'ssecond stage. Interface testing will follow to make sure the electricalconnections are good. A rehearsal of the satellite's countdown sequence isplanned, too. An artist's concept shows a GPS 2F satellite in Earth orbit. Credit: BoeingBoeing is slated to build a dozen Block 2F satellites to replace thecurrent orbiting birds as they age, keeping the navigation signals goingstrong for years to come."The importance is sometimes assumed, but it is worth noting. There areboth military and civil applications for GPS. It is a very criticalnational asset in both regards. From the military perspective, it's prettyeasy to envision that. We use it to obtain precision navigation andtiming," said Hale."I think sometimes what people don't understand are the civilapplications. One that I like to highlight that a lot of people don'trealize is the global economy is completely underpinned by the timingsignals that the GPS constellation provides. So all bank-to-banktransactions or your ATM transactions have a GPS time tag on them thatallows our economy to operate."The Air Force could launch the GPS 2F-2 satellite as early as November using an Atlas 5 rocket from Complex 41."Sustainment is the primary purpose of our launches. We have aconstellation of satellites in orbit, so we are sustaining the existingconstellation and incrementally bringing new capabilities on orbit. So theimpact having a single 2F on orbit with the 2F-1 you might not seedirectly a day after the launch, but what you will see is GPS 2F launcheswill incrementally improve the capabilities to meet the warfighters' needsof tomorrow," Hale said."There is a lot of importance attached to the GPS constellation and it'sability to be accurate and be available at all times. So our efforts hereare in support in that critical national and worldwide asset."STS-134 PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The final planned flight of space shuttle Endeavour is symbolized in the official embroidered crew patch for STS-134. S. intelligence community, already burdened with growing tasksfrom an increasingly dangerous world. The satellite is likely an "Advanced Mentor" design, accordingto GlobalSecurity.Org, a military think tank. Earlier versions weredesignated Orion.Due to satellite development delays and a 1998 Titan launchfailure involving an earlier "Mercury" eavesdropper design, the U.S.has fallen as much as one or two spacecraft behind its original 10-yearschedule to launch such giant eavesdroppers. These spacecraft providethe kind of information the White House, State Dept. and Pentagonneed to make military and national foreign policy decisions. It is also likely a "broad spectrum" satellite that can update keyfrequency information on hostile radars and other detection systemsthat could threaten U.S. forces. The three earlier Mentor spacecraft introduced a very large'wrap-rib' deployable antenna design spanning up to 350 feet, saysGlobalSecurity.Org. The Delta 4-Heavy rocket launches at 9:47 p.m. EST on January 17.Credit: Chris Miller/Spaceflight NowThe National Security Agency will be the prime distributor of thespacecraft's data, sending information from the satellite to theother 15 agencies and organizations that now make up theintelligence community. It has been five years since a large geosynchronous orbiteavesdropping satellite has been launched from Cape Canaveral. Thatearlier satellite, believed to have been a less capable version ofthe Mentor, was lofted on board a Titan-Centaur booster inSeptember 2003.Over the last two-and-a-half years, however, two different eavesdroppingsatellites have been launched on smaller Delta 4-Medium and Atlas 5rockets from Vandenberg Air Force Base, Calif. These spacecraft, withsmaller antennas, are in highly elliptical orbits of roughly 700 x 23,500miles.Instead of remaining parked over one location above the equator, these Vandenberg-launched satellites travel up and down over thenorthern hemisphere. They can listen into radio communications fromdifferent locations or radio waves monitored from different angles, compared with geosynchronous orbit satellites. The data from these different eavesdroppers is then combined andassessed with other sources of information including that obtained byaircraft such as advanced versions of the U-2.Additional coverage for subscribers:VIDEO:FULL LAUNCH EXPERIENCE VIDEO:LAUNCH PAD CAMERA NO. 1 VIDEO:LAUNCH PAD CAMERA NO. 2 VIDEO:THE DELTA 4-HEAVY ROCKET LIFTS OFF VIDEO:LAUNCH AS SEEN FROM PRESS VIEWING SITE VIDEO:TIME-LAPSE MOVIE OF THE GANTRY RETRACTING VIDEO:LAUNCH PAD'S MOBILE GANTRY ROLLED BACK MORE:STS-134 PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The final planned flight of space shuttle Endeavour is symbolized in the official embroidered crew patch for STS-134. File image of a Delta 4-Heavy rocket. Credit: Pat Corkery/United Launch AllianceCountdown clocks are targeting a liftoff time of 6:06 p.m. EST (2306 GMT) from the Florida spaceport's Complex 37. The evening's available launch opportunity likely extends upwards of four hours. The original launch date of Thursday was delayed by 24 hours to fix an issue with ground pyrotechnics that release the big booster at liftoff. See our for live coverage.United Launch Alliance's Delta 4-Heavy is America's biggest unmanned rocket currently in service, capable of lofting the largest and heftiest cargos. The mammoth vehicle is created by taking three Common Booster Cores -- the liquid hydrogen-fueled motor that forms a Delta 4-Medium's first stage -- and strapping them together to form a triple-barrel rocket, and then adding an upper stage. The nighttime blastoff should be visually spectacular, lighting up the Space Coast with three distinct pillars of fire from the main engines trailing more than 200 feet long. Ideal viewing spots include off SR401 at Port Canaveral, along the 528 causeway or on the riverbanks in Titusville.Thundering eastward across the open Atlantic, the rocket will soar out of sight within a few minutes as it embarks on a multi-hour mission to serve the U.S. National Reconnaissance Office, the agency responsible for the country's fleet of intelligence-gathering satellites. The NRO's diverse spacecraft, including telescope-like observers and communications collectors, uncover looming dangers to the nation and provide surveillance over the world's hot spots."Always vigilant, the NRO's eyes and ears give America's policy markers, intelligence analysts, warfighters and homeland security specialists the critical information they need to keep America safe, secure and free," the agency says. The clandestine payload going up this time, known only by its launch identification number of NROL-32, is widely believed to be an essential eavesdropping spacecraft that requires the powerful lift provided by the Delta 4-Heavy to reach its listening post.In an address to the Air Force Association conference in September, NRO Director Bruce Carlson, a retired Air Force general, said this rocket launch would carry "the largest satellite in the world on it."The NRO has flown various types of communication-interceptors since the dawn of the space age, and analysts say it is virtually certain this Delta 4-Heavy is hauling another."I believe the payload is the fifth in the series of what we call Mentor spacecraft, a.k.a. Advanced Orion, which gather signals intelligence from inclined geosynchronous orbits. They are among the largest satellites ever deployed," said Ted Molczan, a respected sky-watcher who keeps tabs on orbiting spacecraft.Destined for geosynchronous orbit 22,300 miles above the planet, this new spacecraft supposedly will unfurl an extremely lightweight but gigantically huge umbrella-like antenna to overhear enemy communications and aid U.S. intelligence."The satellite likely consists of sensitive radio receivers and an antenna generally believed to span up to 100 meters (328 feet) to gather electronic intelligence for the National Security Agency," Molczan said.Observers think the mesh antenna's diameter is the size of a football field, comparable to the International Space Station's remarkable width. That explains why satellite-tracking hobbyists say these Mentor craft are "by far the brightest" in the high-flying geosynchronous orbital perch to see from the ground, outshining conventional television relay birds, weather sentinels and the like.Although NRO satellites are secretive by nature, the spacecraft are visible by just looking up. Molczan is member of a hobbyist group that routinely finds and watches the craft while monitoring the skies with precision. But despite the identity of this particular satellite being obvious, exactly where in the geosynchronous belt it will be positioned and what part of the globe it will cover are details that remain hush-hush."The upcoming launch may replace one of the older spacecraft in the series, or augment the fleet by occupying a new location in geosynchronous orbit," Molczan said. File image of a Delta 4-Heavy rocket launch. Credit: Pat Corkery/United Launch AlliancePrevious Mentor satellites were launched by Titan 4 rockets from Cape Canaveral in 1995, 1998 and 2003, plus the most recent Delta 4-Heavy in early 2009 carried one, according to the satellite-tracking hobbyists. The craft lineage can be traced to the two Magnum satellites trucked to orbit aboard the space shuttle Discovery during the STS-51C mission in 1985 and STS-33 in 1989, historians have indicated. An even earlier generation launched in the 1970s using Atlas rockets from the Cape, according to the authoritative website.Friday's rocket launch continues a surge of NRO spy satellite deployments after a lengthy 20-month lull. An Atlas 5 rocket began this ongoing campaign by dispatching a new-generation radar imaging satellite in September from Vandenberg Air Force Base, California. The upcoming schedule calls for several more significant launches in the next few months:A Delta 4-Heavy rocket for NROL-49 from Vandenberg on January 11A Delta 4 rocket for NROL-27 from Cape Canaveral on March 4An Atlas 5 for NROL-34 from Vandenberg on March 31Carlson said "this is the most aggressive launch campaign that the National Reconnaissance Office has had in 20 years, almost a quarter of a century.""The other thing I can tell you is these are very important, because they all go to update a constellation which is aging rapidly. We bought most of our satellites for three, five, or eight years, and we're keeping them on orbit for ten, twelve, and up to twenty years," Carlson said."Now, when I buy something people complain about how expensive it is, but nobody ever complains when it's time to die and it keeps right on ticking. Some of these guys are like the Energizer bunny and they have really done marvelous work."We're doing things that were designed to essentially operate during the era of the Soviet Union that are today doing tactical intelligence collection that leads us to actionable intelligence on bad guys every day. Every day. And we're doing it with equipment that's 15, 18, and 20 years old."STS-134 PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The final planned flight of space shuttle Endeavour is symbolized in the official embroidered crew patch for STS-134. Free hydrogen ignites as the three RS-68 main engines roar to life during the final seconds of the Delta 4-Heavy rocket's launch countdown. Credit: Gene Blevins/LA Daily News"The flight data review was extremely thorough, scrutinizing not only the extensive, standard flight telemetry data, but also the additional data from more than 500 channels of special instrumentation, specifically installed for this first Heavy mission," said Col. John Insprucker, Evolved Expendable Launch Vehicle Program Director at the Air Force's Space and Missile Systems Center.Officials sifted through mounds of data collected from liftoff through deployment of the mock satellite cargo during the Air Force-ordered test launch. The Defense Department awarded Boeing a $141 million contract to fly the first Delta 4-Heavy on a demonstration launch instead of carrying a real payload. "It's important to remember that the primary payload for this mission was really the instrumentation we carried onboard," Col. Insprucker said. "Our investment in telemetry and additional special instrumentation is helping us quickly zero in on the cause of the anomaly, and I'm confident the data will also enable us to fine-tune all aspects of our future Delta 4 heavy-lift missions."The December 21 flight was deemed a success despite a problem impacting the firing time of all three Common Booster Cores, which were strapped together to form the rocket's first stage. The Rocketdyne-made RS-68 main engine on each booster shut down several seconds early, causing a speed deficit that the rocket's upper stage could not overcome. The dummy satellite was delivered into an orbit much lower than planned and two nanosats were lost. The ongoing investigation to determine why the engines stopped firing 8 seconds prematurely on the port and starboard boosters and 9 seconds early on the center stage has narrowed the list of possible culprits. The leading theory continues to be a condition called cavitation where liquid oxygen flowing through the feedline from the tank to the engine turns to gaseous oxygen. This phenomenon is believed to have occurred around internal sensors that are designed to tell the engines when to shut down. The sensors reacted to the bubbles, thought the boosters had run out of liquid oxygen and commanded the RS-68s to cut off. But each motor had plenty of liquid oxygen remaining in their tanks to finish the normal firing time.Using the standard investigative tool known as a Fault Tree analysis, the team has cleared 42 of 49 potential causes, including the sensors themselves and the main engines. All 7 remaining branches in the Fault Tree involve various types of disturbances in the flow of liquid oxygen, the Air Force said. The Delta 4-Heavy rocket launches on its test flight. Credit: Gene Blevins/LA Daily News"The team is meeting daily across multiple locations to complete the investigation," said Dan Collins, vice president of Boeing Expendable Launch Systems. "Determining root cause from the remaining 7 open branches is the top priority."Computer models that simulate the liquid oxygen flow within the feedline on each booster are examining the cavitation scenario. The liquid oxygen tank is located at the top-end of each stage, above the liquid hydrogen fuel tank, with a feedline running down the length of the booster to the main engine. The Air Force says the engine cutoff sensors are positioned about five feet downstream of the liquid oxygen tank."Initial simulation runs have already given new insight into the flow dynamics in the feedline (velocity and pressure patterns). The team will progressively add details to the computer models to build up an accurate representation of the internal features of the tank and feedline, and to simulate the flight conditions at the time of the premature engine cutoff," the Space and Missile Systems Center said in a statement Friday."The simulation team will use these models, along with the flight sensor data, to identify where cavitation is most likely to have developed in the liquid oxygen flow for the Heavy demonstration flight conditions. The onset of cavitation is thought to be caused by a unique combination of vehicle acceleration,?liquid oxygen?level in the propellant tank,?tank pressures,?feedline internal features and flow rates in the feedline when the RS-68 engine is at full power."The team also plans to simulate liquid oxygen flow under flight conditions from previous Delta 4 missions, where the anomaly was not observed, to help verify the accuracy of the complex computer models."Three previous Delta 4 missions have flown -- all successfully and on target -- in the so-called Medium configuration that features just one Common Booster Core. The Heavy design uses three booster cores in order to launch much heftier payloads.Additional coverage for subscribers:VIDEO:FROM LIFTOFF TO BOOSTER SEPARATION VIDEO:THE DELTA 4-HEAVY LAUNCH (SHORT VERSION) VIDEO:ONBOARD CAMERA RECORDS LAUNCH VIDEO:ONBOARD CAMERA SEES BOOSTER SEPARATION VIDEO:ONBOARD CAMERA CAPTURES FAIRING JETTISON AUDIO:LISTEN TO THE 68-MINUTE PRE-LAUNCH NEWS CONFERENCE VIDEO:ANIMATION PROVIDES PREVIEW OF A DELTA 4-HEAVY LAUNCH VIDEO:RE-LIVE THE INAUGURAL DELTA 4 LAUNCH FROM 2002 VIDEO:ON-PAD FLIGHT READINESS ENGINE FIRING TEST VIDEO:TAKE TOUR OF LAUNCH PAD 37B Apollo 11 special patchSpecial collectors' patch marking the 35th anniversary of the historic Apollo 11 moon landing is now available.Choose your store: - - - Inside Apollo mission controlAn insider's view of how Apollo flight controllers operated and just what they faced when events were crucial. Credit: Chris Miller/Spaceflight NowSEE MORE LAUNCH IMAGES The year's finale began at 3:04 p.m. EST as the Delta 2 booster darted away from pad 17A carrying the newest craft for the Global Positioning System. The three-stage launcher propelled the 4,500-pound satellite into a highly elliptical orbit reaching about 11,000 miles at the high point, 100 miles at the lowest and inclined 40 degrees to the equator. The Lockheed Martin-made satellite was released from the spent rocket 68 minutes after liftoff."The Delta 2 and GPS team did great work throughout this launch campaign," said Col. James Planeaux, Air Force mission director for the launch and commander of the Delta Group. "I'm thrilled to see those long hours and dedication to the mission rewarded with a pinpoint orbit insertion for GPS 2R-18."A solid-propellant kick motor on the satellite itself will fire in a few days to circularize its orbit at 11,000 miles and increase the inclination to 55 degrees where the GPS constellation flies. The craft should be ready to enter service within a couple of weeks."The successful deployment of this high-performance satellite represents another important milestone in the modernization of the GPS constellation and reflects our commitment to achieving mission success for our customer," said Don DeGryse, Lockheed Martin's vice president of Navigation Systems. "Our team is now focused on performing a rapid and efficient on-orbit checkout to quickly place the satellite's advanced navigational capabilities into operational service."Controllers will maneuver the $75 million craft into the Plane C, Slot 1 position of the constellation to take the place of GPS 2A-24. That satellite then moves into another role replacing the ailing GPS 2A-20 satellite, which was launched in May 1993 and has long outlived its seven-year design life. The orbiting network emits continuous navigation signals that allow users to find their position in latitude, longitude and altitude and determine time. Credit: Chris Miller/Spaceflight NowSEE MORE LAUNCH IMAGES The GPS 2R-18 spacecraft is the fifth in a series of eight with enhanced features designed to rejuvenate the GPS constellation."Today's launch moves us another step closer to modernizing the vital GPS constellation, which provides combat effects our warfighters depend on," said Brig. Gen. Susan Helms, commander of the Cape's 45th Space Wing. The modernized satellites transmit additional signals and feature improvements aimed at greater accuracy, tougher resistance to interference and better performance for users around the world. The new civilian signal removes navigation errors caused by the Earth's ionosphere. The military advancements will provide an enhanced jam-resistant signal and enable more-precise targeting of GPS-guided weapons in hostile environments."We have the most robust and capable Global Positioning System in the history of space, and we are focused on delivering world-class space-based positioning, navigation and timing capabilities for our military and civil communities. Thanks to the men and women of the 45thand 50th Space Wings, our industry partners and the Delta 2 and (GPS) 2R launch teams, the success of today's launch was possible due to their dedication and hard work," said Col. David Madden, commander of the Space and Missile Systems Center's Global Positioning Systems Wing.Nine Delta rockets soared to space in 2007, all delivering their NASA, U.S. military and commercial cargos without fault. "This launch wraps up a high-tempo year of delivering space capability to our nation, including three Delta launches from Cape Canaveral in the last 64 days. It's a great year-end exclamation point for the Launch and Range Systems Wing, the United Launch Alliance, and all of our mission teammates," said Planeaux. The highlights from 2007:The Phoenix lander was dispatched for Mars to examine the frozen water in the northern plains that could be a habitable zone for life.NASA's Dawn space probe powered by exotic ion engines was launched to orbit the worlds of Vesta and Ceres in the heart of the asteroid belt.Five tiny NASA satellites for the THEMIS mission were put in orbit to uncover the physics behind Earth's auroras. Two launches of modernized replacement satellites were carried out to reinvigorate the Global Positioning System.A pair of Italian-made COSMO-SkyMed satellites that use radar to image the Earth for commercial and military uses were lofted in separate launches. The Delta 2 rocket marked its 75th consecutive successful launch with deployment of the sharp-eyed WorldView 1 Earth-imaging spacecraft. And the mammoth Delta 4-Heavy rocket entered operational service with the launch of the Air Force's final Defense Support Program missile warning satellite.Complete coverage all nine launches, plus the missions from the past several years can be found in our .Additional coverage for subscribers:VIDEO:THE DELTA 2 ROCKET BLASTS OFF WITH GPS 2R-18 VIDEO:MOBILE SERVICE TOWER IS ROLLED BACK FOR LAUNCH VIDEO:GPS SATELLITE ANIMATION STS-134 PatchFree shipping to U.S. addresses! The final planned flight of space shuttle Endeavour is symbolized in the official embroidered crew patch for STS-134.
